Alum stone is a mineral found naturally in various parts of the world. The first traces of its use were discovered in Syria, around its capital, Damascus. Made of mineral salts and used since Antiquity, alum stone is extracted from natural alunite mines. In its raw state, it is shaped like a transparent and odourless crystal. It also comes polished in the form of a stick, liquid in the form of a spray or as a powder.
Today, alum stone is commonly used as a natural deodorant or as an after-shave for its astringent and haemostatic qualities. In Antiquity it was mainly used as a mordant in dyeing.
