Finding the right Aleppo soap for you

31.03.2019

Have you heard about Aleppo soap and want to try it, but are not sure which one to choose? Here, Najel tells you all you need to know to make the right choice!

The forefather of all soaps

Did you know that Aleppo soap is the oldest soap in the world? For thousands of years, it has been cooked by Aleppo's master soap makers and their craftsmanship is still handed down from father to son so we can enjoy its beneficial effects. This traditional know-how was brought to the West by the Crusaders and marked the birth of Marseille soap.

Aleppo soap is an ecological product, free of artificial colorants, synthetic fragrances, palm oil and preservatives. It is made using artisanal methods: the soap paste is obtained by saponification of olive and bay laurel oils. It is then spread out and cut into cubes, before being stamped and dried for a minimum of 9 months.

Why 9 months of drying?

Unlike industrial soaps, Aleppo soap does not contain palm oil which helps the soap paste dry more rapidly.

The properties of Aleppo soap

Aleppo soap comes from a hot saponification of two select oils: olive oil and bay laurel oil. Olive oil has excellent emollient properties and is a powerful cleanser when transformed into soap. Bay laurel oil has soothing, antiseptic, disinfectant and regenerative properties. For this reason, Aleppo soap with a high percentage of bay laurel oil (30% and above) is advised for dry and sensitive skin. It is recommended for cleansing and soothing irritable and so-called "problem" skin.

Aleppo soap cleanses skin thoroughly and is equally suitable for body, face and hair. It soothes dry scalps and helps fight dandruff.

How to recognize a genuine Aleppo soap?

Many soaps are sold under the name of Aleppo soap. However, don’t be taken in by appearances! Some so-called Aleppo soaps contain palm oil or coconut oil that alter the properties of Aleppo soap. These guidelines will help you make the right choice:

- Remember to check the list of ingredients and the origin of the soap you buy.

- Favour organic shops.

- Aleppo soap must be made in Aleppo and its region to reap the benefits of Aleppo's climate both for the cultivation of olive trees and for the drying process. Since 2011, a logo authenticating the origin of Aleppo soap has been registered by the Syrian Ministry of Economy to certify the production of soap in Aleppo and its region.

Aleppo soap has also been name protected, in Syria, for geographical origin. This protection is now just awaiting ratification to be recognized on an international scale.

- In addition, to be sure a soap is really cooked by a master soap maker, it must be stamped with the master soap maker's seal. This seal helps identify the manufacturer when soaps are sold loose in the Syrian market place.

- You can recognize a traditional Aleppo soap by its uneven edges and its yellow/brown color due to the drying time. This brown layer is a way of determining the age of the soap. The thicker it is, the older the soap. The inside of the soap, however, remains the emerald green color of the oils that make it.

Choose an Aleppo soap to suit your skin type and your needs

For daily use of Aleppo soap on oily or normal to combination skin, we recommended using a soap with a low percentage of bay laurel oil. For example, Najel's Pure Olive Soaps, 5% BLO or 12% BLO will please all the family.

An Aleppo soap with a high percentage of bay laurel oil (30% and above) is more suitable for dry, sensitive and reactive skins.
Najel has commissioned use tests for its Aleppo soaps to assess skin tolerance.

The results of these tests are as follows:

- Aleppo Soap with 40% BLO:

Tests carried out under dermatological control on 20 volunteers, with sensitive and reactive skin, aged 19 to 63 years, for 3 weeks with daily use.
The soap has excellent skin tolerance. 96.15% of volunteers gave a positive response and 3.85% a negative response.
Intent to purchase rate was 95% and satisfaction rate was 100%.

- Aleppo Soap with 30% BLO:

Tests carried out under dermatological control on 20 volunteers with dry and sensitive skin, aged 22 to 65 years, for 3 weeks with daily use.
The soap has excellent skin tolerance. 93.85% of volunteers gave a positive response and 6.15% a negative response.
Intent to purchase rate was 100% and satisfaction rate was 100%.
